I got emotional recording a voice message this week

I was recording a voice message for a client this week, ahead of our next session.

And halfway through, I had to stop talking. Because I wasn't just talking to her anymore. I was hearing myself back, from January.

What I reflected to her was this. Some of what she's carrying isn't new. It's just that becoming a mother was such a significant shift, and the role she's been playing in her business never really evolved to meet it. And the overwhelm she's feeling isn't a sign something's gone wrong. It's a message. Enough, enough, enough.

Right now, for a lot of us, our subconscious has had her hands white knuckled on the steering wheel. Just trying to keep us safe. But safe isn't the same as free.

Mine landed in January, in the middle of school holidays. Calendar filling back up, trying to start the year strong. And underneath it, this tension I couldn't explain away. Until it did. I only have three more summers with my youngest before he's a teenager who won't want his holidays with his mum. Three. That's it.

And the business I'd built to give me freedom wasn't giving me the freedom to be with him.

It took months to actually shift. Not one decision. A proper, honest audit of the whole business.

  • Revisiting who I was actually here to serve now, not who I was serving when I started.

  • Auditing every product and service on offer, and getting honest about which ones were still aligned, and which ones I was only still running out of habit.

  • Refining my boundaries. I've always had them. They just needed to get tighter around exactly when I was available for client work and when I wasn't.

  • Introducing new ways of working and streamlining the processes running underneath the business.

  • Changing how the brand itself showed up. How we positioned. How we advertised. What we actually led with.

There were slow months in there where nothing looked like it was moving, and the only thing that got me through was trusting the groundwork was working towards something, even before there was any evidence of it.

What I know now is that the business isn't usually the problem. It's that the role we're playing in it was built for a version of us that doesn't exist anymore. Until that catches up, it's going to keep feeling like hard work, or like it's in conflict with everything else you're trying to hold.

I want to ask you something.

Hit reply and tell me. Is there a part of how your business is running right now that doesn't feel aligned? Something that's encroaching on, or sitting in conflict with, what actually matters to you outside of it?

With love, Mira
